Padel racket buying guide

How to choose your padel racket?

Shape, weight, balance, playing level: the criteria that really make the difference in finding a racket suited to your style.

Choosing your padel racket — or pala in the jargon — is far from straightforward when you’re starting out. Round, teardrop or diamond shape? Light or heavy? Low, medium or high balance? 3K, 12K, 18K carbon? Brands compete with models and technical specs all look the same. Yet there’s a simple logic: your pala must match your playing level, your physical profile and your style.

This guide sets out the right criteria, debunks misconceptions, and gives you concrete references — tested by our players — so you don’t go wrong. Whether you’re a beginner getting the hang of it, an intermediate player making progress or a competitor P500-P1000, you’ll find the pala you need here.

The 4 criteria that really matter

Many criteria listed on technical specs are marketing. In reality, only four parameters determine how the pala behaves on court: the face shape, weight, balance and carbon level. Everything else (colour, design, secondary core material, player signature) has only marginal influence.

1. The face shape: round, teardrop or diamond?

The face shape is the first criterion to look at. It determines where the sweet spot (the optimal impact zone) is located and therefore the type of play the pala is designed for.

Round — control and tolerance

The sweet spot is centred, wide and easy to find. The round pala forgives off-centre hits and favours consistent shots. This is the shape to choose when starting out or for players who prioritise safety above all. You’ll find this philosophy in Bullpadel Vertex 04, Head Evo Extreme or Nox Nextgen Pro Hybrid.

Teardrop — versatility

The sweet spot moves slightly upwards on the face. The ideal compromise between control and power, it’s the best-selling shape because it’s the most adaptable. If you’re progressing in regular competition but aren’t yet a pure attacker, this is what you need. The Head Speed Motion or Siux Fenix Pro 5 are key references.

Diamond — power and attack

The sweet spot is at the top. Maximum mass concentration in the head, explosive leverage on smashes and vibora shots. Reserved for advanced players who master their technique: without good centre contact, you’ll lose the control you gain in power. Nox AT10 Genius signature Agustín Tapia or Babolat Air Viper 2.5 are typical diamond rackets.

Our versatility pick

Head Speed Motion 2025 — teardrop shape, medium balance, perfect for intermediate progression.

2. Weight: between 350 and 390 grammes, no more

The majority of padel rackets weigh between 350 and 390 grammes (stringing and original grip included). A few simple rules:

  • Women and light players (under 65 kg): aim for 350-365 g
  • Average players: 365-375 g — the most versatile range
  • Powerful or very tall players: 375-390 g for added stability

The heavier the pala, the more powerful but also the more physically demanding. Don’t fall into the trap of a heavy pala to gain power if you don’t have the fitness level — it’s the quickest way to end up with tennis elbow. A beginner who picks up a 385 g pala will get injured within weeks.

Good to know

A pala’s weight is adjusted with adhesive lead tape placed on the frame. You can take a 365 g pala and “increase” it to 375 g with 10 g of lead tape — the reverse isn’t possible. So it’s better to start on the lighter side and add weight if needed.

3. Balance: where the mass is concentrated

Balance indicates where the pala “tilts” when you hold it by the handle. Three standard positions:

Low balance (handle)

Maximum manoeuvrability, net control, accurate bandeja shots. Ideal for patient baseline players and defenders. Less raw power but more reactivity.

Medium balance

The compromise. The majority of modern rackets feature medium balance because it suits the widest range of profiles. If you’re unsure, go for medium.

High balance (head)

Maximum leverage on smashes. For advanced attackers, explosive players who play near the wall and look to finish points quickly. Demands good fitness as the wrist does a lot of work.

4. Playing level and FIP category

In France, the federation classifies players by P category (P25 to P2000+). Here’s how to match your level to a pala type:

Level Pala profile Shape Weight Carbon
Beginner Forgiving, light Round 350-365 g 3K
Intermediate (P25-P250) Versatile Round / Teardrop 365-375 g 3K-12K
Advanced (P500) Performance-oriented Teardrop 370-380 g 12K
Expert (P1000) Precise + powerful Teardrop / Diamond 370-385 g 12K-18K
Competitor (P1500+) Specialised by position Diamond (attack) / Teardrop (defence) 375-385 g 18K

Common mistakes to avoid

Buying your favourite player’s racket

Agustín Tapia doesn’t play like you. His pala is designed for his level, his physique and his court position. Taking a pro signature when you’re a beginner is shooting yourself in the foot — you’ll have a demanding, unforgiving pala, and you’ll progress more slowly than with a properly adapted model.

Confusing price with performance

A padel racket at £301 isn’t three times better than one at £86. From £69 onwards, you’ll already find excellent padel rackets that cover all needs up to P500 level. Beyond £129, it’s mostly premium materials (18K carbon, premium core) that add extra comfort, not proportional performance gains.

Neglecting the grip

A good padel racket poorly equipped (new unsuitable grip, no overgrip) plays worse than a decent racket properly set up. Change your overgrip every 15–20 hours of play and adjust its thickness to your hand size.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a 3K, 12K and 18K padel racket?

The number indicates the density of the carbon weave (in thousands of fibres per weave). The higher it is, the stiffer the face and the faster the ball bounces off. 3K is softer and more forgiving (perfect for beginners), 12K offers the best balance for intermediate to advanced players, 18K is ultra-rigid and reserved for competitors seeking maximum smash response.

How long does a padel racket last?

A well-maintained padel racket lasts between 150 and 300 hours of play (depending on your intensity and technique). A regular player (2–3 sessions a week) should plan to replace their padel racket every 18–24 months. Signs of wear: loss of bounce, cracks on the frame, hitting surface that sounds hollow.

Should I put a frame protector on?

Yes, definitely. The frame protector (£5–£9) absorbs impacts on glass walls and mesh, which are the main cause of racket breakage. A protected padel racket lasts 2 to 3 times longer. Install it as soon as you buy it, before your first session.

Can you play padel with a tennis racket?

No, it’s forbidden in tournaments and strongly discouraged for casual play. Tennis rackets are strung and much longer, making them unsuitable for padel’s cage play. For a first try, most clubs lend padel rackets. If you want to try without spending much, get a beginner padel racket for under £43.

What’s the warranty period for a padel racket?

The manufacturer’s legal warranty covers 2 years against defects. Note: this warranty doesn’t cover damage from use (impact against wall or ground), which is considered normal wear. For premium models, some brands (Bullpadel, Head, Nox) offer an extended commercial warranty of 6 months on spontaneous breakage.

How do I know if a padel racket is right for me?

Three good tests: 1) On your first shot, you feel the ball clearly without excessive vibration in your arm. 2) You can string together 10–15 rallies without losing centre. 3) After an hour of play, your elbow and shoulder aren’t sore. If all three conditions are met, the padel racket suits your level and physique.

Is it better to buy new or second-hand?

New is still preferable: you get the warranty, you know the racket’s exact history, and with regular promotions (like our −50 to −65% discounts), price gaps with second-hand are often small. Second-hand can be worth considering to test an unusual shape (premium diamond) before investing, but always check for cracks on the frame and playing surface.
